As my full-time legal career was coming to an end in 2012, I was accepted as a member/partner of the Advocates Law Group (ALG) a virtual law firm with about a dozen lawyers and no staff. It may have been the first virtual law firm in Washington State, allowing lawyers to work remotely, connected through technology. The concept is different than an online firm because lawyers still meet in person with clients, doing all the normal legal work expected of lawyers, including going to court. We just had no central office or staff, making the practice more affordable. Some states require law firms to have a bona fide office address, which means the firm must have a physical office space. The Washington State Bar Association, under the supervision and delegated authority of the State Supreme Court, had no restriction on virtual firms. I was the only member north of Everett while my partners were almost all in the King County area. I retired from the firm in 2018, being sent off with a retirement party in Bellevue. I feel fortunate to have finished my career at ALG, having enjoyed working with talented members of the firm.
