Skagit Valley

The Skagit River runs from the Cascades west to the waters of Skagit Bay and the San Juan Islands, creating a delta at the valley’s west end. The river dominates and defines the geography and history of Skagit County as it winds along the ancient channel it has created in its rush to the sea. Settlers created towns and cities along the banks of the river, from Marblemount, Rockport, and Concrete in the east to Burlington, Mount Vernon, and LaConner in the west. Anacortes is an exception, having been established on Fidalgo Island, which is separate from the river. Along with that development came hydroelectric dams to create energy for King County residents and an attempt to “tame” a force of nature.

Debbie and I arrived in Skagit County in 1976 with very little money, one car, and much energy for new jobs and careers. Our only move from the Valley was west to San Juan Island in 1977, again for new jobs and opportunities. We moved back in 1979, this time with two cars and a little more money. Skagit Valley has been good to my family.

Samish Island

Samish Island & the San Juans in the distance, the Island is connected to the mainland by the road at the bottom of the photo. Our first home was on the south side of the Island with a view of Padilla Bay. On a clear day we could see Mount Ranier from our living room.
