An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s, Doris Kearns Goodwin

Using her marriage to Richard Goodwin as a backdrop, Doris Kearns Goodwin takes the reader on a well-documented political and cultural journey through the 1960s. An Unfinished Love Story is about the love the Goodwins had for each other, and the unfinished story of their love for America, written by a historian who was there. We learn about the lives and times of JFK, LBJ, RFK, Jackie, Humphrey, McCarthy, MLK, Jr., and so many others.

Both Goodwins had a front row seat in the White House and on the campaign trails. We relive those years as the Goodwins open hundreds of storage boxes filled with letters, diaries, audio recordings, and memorabilia that Dick had kept for over 50 years. The book was invaluable to me because much of 1968 was hidden from me as I patrolled the DMZ in Korea for most of that tumultuous year. My understanding of current events was limited to what the Army printed in the Stars and Stripes newspaper. The Audible version of this book featured actual recordings of historic speeches and White House telephone conversations.
