Writing

During my professional career as an advocate, I wrote for a very limited readership. Lawyers write motions, memorandums, briefs, and responses to the same from opposing lawyers. The target audience is a judge or panel of judges, knowing that my client, the opposing party, and the lawyer will also read the documents with a critical eye. Additionally, lawyers often write letters, which can be highly detailed and technical in nature. Whether the writing is of quality material is seldom ascertained by the lawyer, except in rare instances, when a judge makes a comment about the documents. Winning the case is taken as approval of the lawyer’s writing, but the truth is the motion or case may have been a winner based on other factors, such as the law and the facts.

I say all of that to tell you why I write and why it is included in this Portfolio. After I retired from the practice of law, the urge to create did not retire. I started writing short stories, which were submitted to www.reedsy.com in a weekly competition. No longer tied to facts and law, I tried my hand at fiction. My stories have not been selected as winners, but they have been posted on the Reedsy website. You can read a few samples here.
