My law school seatmate in the first-year tort class, Tom Lucas, was from South Dakota and had reported my poem, “Davies v. Mann,” to Professor Southwell, encouraging him to call upon me to recite the case in class. It all worked out well, and I wrote this poem for Tom as an expression of our friendship. Wounded Knee is a historical site in South Dakota, and is a reference to Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, a book that had recently been published. Tom appreciated the connection.
